We recently attended an educational breakfast presentation hosted by the Des Moines Area Association of Realtors® and they gave us some information about the lead water service lines in our community. All information shared in this blog post can be accessed in further detail on the Des Moines Water Works website dmww.com.
According to the Des Moines Water Works website, "For more than 100 years, DMWW has provided safe, affordable drinking water for homes and businesses in central Iowa. While there is no lead in the water Des Moines Water Works produces nor when it leaves our three water treatment plants, we recognize there are privately owned lead water services and lead in private plumbing in older areas of our community.”
This image is sourced from the American Water Works Association and it illustrates the estimated 6.1 million lead service lines still in use across America.
“DMWW estimates there are 20,000 lead or galvanized water service lines. No level of lead is safe for children, so we are taking steps to inform property owners who may have a lead or galvanized water service line or a service line of unknown material.” stated on their site.
DMWW began notifying property owners of their service line material back in October 2024 if they were made of lead, galvanized steel, or unknown. If you are interested to see what your home’s service lines are made of, they have a cool feature on their website to see what service lines around you or in your local area are made of.
